Sligo Institute of TechnologyTechnological, Engineering and Computing Facility1999-2001 / €6.0MThe project accommodates the new technological, engineering and computing laboratories which together with the existing technology centre constitutes the School of Engineering at the Sligo Institute of Technology. The total area of the new facility is 4,460m2 The design is generated to a large extent by two factors. The first is context. Its extremely sensitive situation in the overall master plan has placed great emphasis on internal circulation and the importance of a public street. At the same time, its location at central library and entrance hall means that it becomes the Institute's 'front door' in terms of public perception. The second factor is energy. The response to directives to maximise on natural phenomena and to reduce mechanical "wastage" has together with circulation requirements produced an engineering metaphor appropriate to contemporary culture as well as providing an economical and functional solution to its precise brief requirements. The building provides a strong and memorable identity while inserting itself comfortably in the overall development. |
